Today is the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities. We asked members of our Insight Group to share what "The Future is Accessible" means to them. Chloe Holgate shared this story.
Read The Future is Accessible: The little things make the biggest difference…With such a large proportion of disabled people housed by the social sector, and our rapidly ageing population, the design of the physical spaces that we build and manage is increasingly critical in supporting our tenants’ health and wellbeing. Building with the future of the home in mind – not just its initial occupants but a series of households over the lifetime of the property, is so important and sits well with the current thinking on energy efficiency and climate impacts.
Read Sinéad Butters, PlaceShapers: "Our collective role in regenerating and renewing communities offers a clear opportunity for us to lead on delivering well-designed, inclusive and adaptable homes"…For the last in our series of personal stories to celebrate #ForAccessibleHomes week, we asked Nurse Sarah O’Connor about the difference her accessible home has made to her life and career.
Read Sarah O'Connor's #ForAccessibleHomes story…Across the housing market, the lack of affordable or social housing and the high cost of home ownership for many means that the private rental sector is the only available option. This research highlighted the additional social injustices faced by many wheelchair users, and others living with disabilities, who are reliant upon this sector.
Read Commonweal Housing: "Many wheelchair users are faced with no choice but to live in unfit and inappropriate housing"…I regularly see first-hand how housing associations like Habinteg transform people’s lives by providing quality, affordable homes. Habinteg’s #ForAccessibleHomes campaign is raising awareness of the importance of those homes being accessible, and I’m pleased to lend it my support.
Read Kate Henderson, National Housing Federation: "Our sector’s ambition is that everyone who wants a great place to live can come to a housing association."…Dan Baker is an actor and photographer amongst other things and is currently living in Cheltenham. Dan has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and needs a home suitable for him, his equipment, his mum and visiting carers. Read his #ForAccessibleHomes story.
