Sheron Carter commenting on ITV's Housing Crisis: What next for our elderly?

Yesterday, ITV tonight aired Housing Crisis: What Next For The Elderly?

We are pleased that this programme has shone a light on the lack of options for older people. Centre for Ageing Better research featured in the show states that 90% of older people remain in their home, even if it becomes unsuitable or even dangerous.

Therefore, we need to support older people to age in place. We are glad the show considered different options for older people, not only extra care schemes but also making use of Disabled Facilities Grants and most importantly, improving the mainstream accessible housing available, as evidenced by a Habinteg Lifetime Home which was featured in the show.

Homes built to be accessible and adaptable are a vital tool for tackling the housing crisis for the ageing population. We believe building accessible homes for older people will help alleviate the pressure on our existing housing stock and the NHS.
