Tenants at Headway Court have made the most of Habinteg’s tenant-led-improvement budget by strategically positioning planters on their pavements to stop heavy vehicles mounting their curbs.
One Headway Court tenant, Chris, explained that the scheme had been having trouble with drivers in larger vehicles who were having difficulty navigating the narrow streets of the scheme’s cul-de-sac.
He said: “Some contractors used to just drive on the pavement to reverse. Roughly 25 pavement slabs have been broken over time.”
Smart, green-minded solutions
In July, Headway Court’s tenants spoke to their neighbourhood coordinator Karen Blissett about the damage. She promptly contacted the local authority to find a solution.
At first, the local authority suggested that they could build bollards to deter drivers from mounting the pavement, before they hit on the idea of installing planters instead of bollards.
Tenants at Headway Court liked the idea, as did Habinteg’s landscaper who agreed to build the planters himself.
Tenants applied for funding through the tenant-led improvement budget with support from Karen. Their application was reviewed and approved by a tenant-led panel.
Fund your own community project
Within three weeks the planters were built and delivered, and Karen and tenants now share the lovely job of watering Headway Court’s magnolias.
“Thankfully, our pavements are much safer now,” said Chris,
The successful installation of Headway Court’s planters is a great reminder of what the tenant-led improvement budget can help with.
