Cooking outdoors is fun and a great way to make the most of warmer weather, but it needs to be done safely.
If hosting a barbecue is on your list of things to do this summer, take a look at this key advice from the London Fire Brigade to help you stay safe while barbecuing.
Never use a barbecue indoors or on a balcony
Place your barbecue on level ground. Keep it well away from anything that may catch fire (sheds, fences, trees or tents etc).
Use a starter fuel or firelighters
Never use petrol, paraffin or any flammable liquids on your barbecue – firelighters are a much safer option. And, only use enough charcoal to cover the base of your barbecue.
Keep children and pets and away
If you have children or pets, never leave them alone with a barbecue and never leave a barbecue unattended either. It’s a good idea to always have a bucket of water or sand nearby in case the fire gets out of hand too.
Barbecues can stay hot for hours
A barbecue can also give off carbon monoxide fumes for several hours after it goes out, so don’t take it indoors. If using a disposable barbecue, only use it outdoors in a suitable and safe area. Follow any local council rules or guidance on their use.
