No matter where you are, how old you are or how aware you think you may be, scams can affect us all – if something looks too good to be true, it could be a scam.
Scams Awareness Week (3-9 July 2023) is an annual Citizens Advice campaign that provides information on how to spot scams and what you can do about them.
Spotting a scam
Emails or texts claiming you’ve won something that you didn’t enter or suddenly hearing from a relative that you didn’t know you had asking for help or money, these are all potential scams.
Anything that urges you to respond or pay quickly should ring alarm bells, especially if it’s asking you to make a bank transfer or purchase gift vouchers.
Your information should always be kept secure, so anyone that’s asking for your personal information should be checked.
While most of the above advice applies online, Citizens Advice has reported that it’s seen a rise in scammers posing as traders.
If a trader or cold caller knocks at your door selling a service or product requiring upfront payment, please ensure they are genuine and trustworthy before agreeing to work with them or use their service.
Protect yourself
If you think you’ve been scammed, don’t be embarrassed. Contact your bank immediately to let them know. You should also change any relevant login details and check for viruses.
While scam awareness campaigns may run a couple of times a year, it’s important to be scam aware all year round. If you think you’re being scammed, the safest option is to get advice.
