Is your driving licence up to date?

Over two million people are currently driving around with an out-of-date driving licence. If this is you, you could be risking a fine of up to £1,000.

If you’re not, we’ve done the research to find out how you can check the status of your license.

Checking your licence

There are three places you can check on your physical licence: the photocard expiry date (which must be renewed every 10 years), check your correct address, and check your name and gender is correct if you’ve changed it.

If any of these are out of date, you won’t be fined for renewing late, but if you are stopped by the police, you could be fined up to £1,000.

Renewing your licence

Again, there are three ways you can renew your driving licence:

  • online at gov.uk
  • by post – you can get the ‘D1 pack’ from most post offices, or
  • in person at selected post offices.

How much does it cost

It’s free to change your name and address on your licence, however it will cost you £14 to renew your photo online (£17 if you renew by post).

There will also be an added £4.50 if the Post Office takes your photo too. It is quicker to renew your licence online, renewing your licence by post can take up to three weeks. But the good news is that you still continue driving while you wait for your new licence to arrive.
