Vacating a Habinteg Home? Here’s what you need to do

Do you know how much notice you have to give us if you’d like to move out of your Habinteg home and what happens if you hand in your keys early?

If you want to end your tenancy with us, you’d need to give a notice period of 28 days, which starts when Habinteg has received completed and signed Notice of Termination Form from you. If you submit it to us after the beginning of the week, your 28 days’ notice period will start on the following Monday.

Notice can be given via a phone call to our Customer Service Team on 0300 365 3100, but you must sign and submit the Notice of tenancy termination form.docx to verify your details. The notice can be handed into your Neighbourhood Team or emailed to direct@habinteg.org.uk.

Note that if you hand in your keys to the property early, the notice period still applies.

Acknowledgement letter

Once you‘ve handed in the Notice of Termination Form, your Neighbourhood Team will send you a letter asking to make an appointment with you to carry out an inspection of the property and discuss the when and where to return the keys to.

The letter will also give you a formal tenancy end date and an estimate of the closing balance of your rent account at that date. If your account is in credit, Habinteg will refund the money to you at the end of the notice period.

If the keys to the property are handed in later than the date and time stated on the letter, Habinteg may have to charge rent for the week in question.

Extra charges

Once you’ve returned the keys, we have the right to clear and dispose of any items left in the property as we see fit. However, you’ll be charged for the cost of the clearance and disposal so please ensure you clear all belongings and rubbish from the property.

When vacating a property tenants must:

  • Have the meters read and water turned off
  • leave electrical cables in a safe condition
  • leave all fixtures and fittings in good repair
  • remove any appliances or furniture you own - use a qualified trades person where needed
  • leave the property in a condition whereby it can be immediately let.

You’ll be charged for any repairs or damage to the property that are your responsibility. And if we need to clean your property to re-let it, you’ll also have to pick up that bill too.

Other information & lodgers

Other things we’ll ask about on the Notice of tenancy termination form.docx include:

  • Your gas/electricity supplier
  • A gas/electricity meter reading
  • Gas/electricity payment type
  • Any accessibility adaptations carried out in the property
  • A reason why you’re ending your tenancy.

Please make sure that if you have any lodgers in your home, that they also leave by the time your tenancy ends too.

If you have any questions regarding ending your tenancy and leaving your Habinteg home or you’re thinking about it, please speak with your Neighbourhood Team or call our Customer Services Team at Habinteg Direct on 0300 365 3100 or direct@habinteg.org.uk.
