Furnishing your home

Raynville Crescent ( Habinteg property) in LeedsUnexpected costs to replace broken household appliances or furniture can crop up at any time. If you’re a new tenant you may not have all the things you need to furnish your new home.

There are a number of ways you can get furniture cheaply or for free for your home. There’s also support available to help with buying furniture.

How you can cheaply furnish your home

Community websites such as Freecycle and Freegle are a great way to get household items for free. Instead binning or trying to sell unwanted items, people give them away to their local community via Freecycle and Freegle.

You'll find useful items, such as sofas, tables and other large pieces of furniture, which are unsuitable for donating to charity shops.

Visit MoneySavingExpert for more details.

You may also have social media groups for your area where people share items they’re giving away.

Olio is an app that enables people to give away items to others in the local area, including furniture. Find out more about Olio.

Help to pay for household appliances and furniture

If you're struggling to afford basic furniture or white goods, the organisation End Furniture Poverty has an extensive list of grants, schemes and advice on getting the items you need.

Also, if you have an urgent need for household applications and furniture, you can apply for help through Habinteg's tenant support fund.
